Wade knee-deep through water in a pitch black tunnel at Hezekiah's Tunnel - Siloam Tunnel, an ancient feat of engineering that protected the city's water supply from the invading Assyrian army in the late 8th century BCE. Built under King Hezekiah, the tunnels were carved with a pickaxes from either side until the tunnel diggers met in the middle. They can be explored by guided tour, but bring a light source, wear bottoms that you can roll up above your knees, and carry a backpack in which to place your shoes before wading in. • Easy to miss, it is worth reading about it, when I was the last time I could watch it, but it was not possible to go down to it

  • If you go be sure to bring a flashlight or headlamp. It is very dark in the tunnel and the footing is very uneven. The water was quite chilly and you had no idea of how much further you had to go once...  more »

  • Walking through these tunnels (which are dry) is mind blowing! To see that they carved these tunnels out in order to protect the city, the water sources and also capture the city...it's a modern marvel. The David Tunnels however, are wet and have about waist high water and complete darkness.
  • Go through the water tunnel!! Especially if you have kids or teens with you! This is unforgettable! Wear water shoes and bring dry pants to change into when you get out. Buy the 7 shekel flashlight.
