Red Canyon, Eilat

4.8
#3 of 18 in Nature in Southern District
Enjoy a fairly challenging hike through the narrow, picture-perfect red gorge of Red Canyon. Observe the scenic desert foliage and an array of wildlife as you work your way towards the peak. You'll notice that the iconic red sandstone, in some cases millions of years old, changes color subtly throughout the day. You’ll find that, refreshingly, there are no signs of civilization in sight, giving you the feeling that you are wandering in the middle of the wilderness. Be aware that the hike requires you to climb occasionally, and includes narrow spaces only a few meters wide. • If you're staying in Eilat, try not to miss a visit to the Red Canyon. It's about a 35 minute drive through the stunning Eilat mountains to get there and, when you arrive, you won't be disappointed. T...  more »
  • We went in the late afternoon (17:00h) with the rental car. With Goggle Maps and also without finding good. Only the access road to the parking lot is very stony, dusty and bumpy !! At the starting point there is a box with a card in different languages. There are 3 difficulty routes for hiking. You should definitely put on sturdy footwear, a special physical condition is not required. Only with the black route one should be dizziness-free. But there are well-placed ladders and safe handles, as you can see in my pictures right away. Definitely, you have impressive rocks and high canyons with a great play of light through the sun ! We were even lucky enough to discover goats and some kind of marmot. So eyes on hiking. The short evening trip was definitely worth it. In the morning there are many buses, in the afternoon you are more lucky to be there alone !

  • Walking through the red canyon is a fantastic experience. It is not difficult to get through unless you had some kind of mobility problems. I really recommend continuing onto some of the other walks in the area when you get to the end of the canyon, they are just as beautiful!
  • One of the most charming and breath taking area I visited during my stay in Israel. I was there with my family, and my mother was a true hero as some parts of the canyon can certainly called adventurous; there is a bit climbing and hight included.
