Muckross Abbey, Killarney

Located in Killarney National Park, the historical Muckross Abbey is known for its long-standing structure and central courtyard. You'll notice that the abbey, founded in 1448, has been well preserved, although much of it is roofless now. Stroll the courtyard, which is surrounded by a vaulted cloister and features a giant yew tree. Over the years, three Gaelic poets, Geoffrey O'Donoghue, Aodhagan O'Rathaille, and Eoghan Rua O'Suilleabhain, were buried here. Explore the ruins of the site, which were reconstructed several times after attacks. Consider adding a trip to the nearby Muckross House to your itinerary for the day. • Do not be discouraged by the fact that it is a ruin (as alas most of the religious buildings of Ireland prior to Cromwell)! It's wonderful.

  • Well preserved but you can still get up close and personal with the place. Easy to get to. We were able to clamber around without notices of keep out everywhere. Free  more »

  • Very nice experience! Lot of rooms to explore. There is also a well preserved cemetery beside the Abbey. Must see if you find yourself in the national park!
  • Stunning building! Free entrance and must seen attraction when visiting Killarney. There is a amazing three in the middle of the old monastery which makes you fell perfectly how the Christians monks used to live and dedicate their lives to god work.
