Foynes Flying Boat Museum, Foynes

#1 of 14 in Museums in County Limerick
At Foynes Flying Boat Museum, the station where Irish coffee debuted, view a detailed history of transatlantic flight. As the last port of call on the eastern shore for seaplanes, Foynes was the biggest civilian airport on the continent during World War II. This aviation and maritime station was famous for the invention of Irish coffee, which was prepared in the 1930s and 1940s to comfort cold passengers. After closing in 1946, the village and port weren't an important aviation site again until 1988, when a portion of the old station was leased by this museum. Take a tour the interactive museum exhibits, and step on board the B314 replica to understand the site's historic contributions. • This is a really interesting museum in a very picturesque part of Limerick. Even though the flying boats did not operate for very long it's really amazing how much effort the people put into the opera...  more »
  • Lovely museum and lovely staff. All exhibits seem lovingly restored and looked after. Educational film at the start of the tour is really informative and interesting, as are all the rooms you can visit. There are parts geared towards younger visitors and our kids really enjoyed them. It does not seem advertised enough, and that's a real shame, because it feels like something a lot of people would enjoy. We would like to visit again when we're back in the area, maybe next time we'll visit on a nice, sunny day, so we experience the observation deck fully.
  • A trip back to the golden age of aviation, 1930's and 1940's nostalgia, from Hollywood filmstars and pioneering aviators, to the wonderful recreation of a flying boat.step on board and see for yourself. Learn how the legendary Irish coffee came about, nostalgia oozes in this place. Well worth a visit. In the cafe, real homemade cakes, great coffee, tea, hot food, scrumptious!!! Top marks.
