An Evening of Food reviews
Fantastic story telling over dinner. Food, alone, was good. Food, with folklore, tasted even better. Actually went several years ago and wanted to re-review. more »

This was such a great event, and I'm glad it was the cherry to top off my last night in Dublin. Host, Helena, was such an accomplished and articulate story teller, as well as a great singer. I definitely learned more about the humble potato than I ever thought I would. As someone who loves both food and history, this was a perfect experience. A delicious meal served in a fun, lively atmosphere.
Do this early on in your trip, especially if this is the first time you have been to Ireland. An expanded review of this can also be found on Trip Advisor, who does not have a character limit. Johnny is absolutely enigmatic. He is also quintessentially Irish. He is going to tell you what others believe, why they believe it, and the historical context but he is not going to require that you believe it or that you alter your beliefs; he only requires that you understand another belief potentially other than what you believe is out there. He is soft despite his imposing figure and you can tell that even the dead pan statements are sometimes intended to be jokes by that beautiful mischievousness twinkling in his eyes. Even though I had done several other tours in the week leading up to this, this evening really captured the history that must necessarily be cobbled together as you travel between sites. The way Johnny presented it had a nice flow and he is a born storyteller. He is enigmatic and engaging--great with eye contact, patter, choice of words, and intonation. He also breaks up the evening into three parts so that it isn't just him straight coming at you or interrupting what was an absolutely gorgeous dinner. You eat dinner while the two musicians play. I absolutely loved the musicians, as well. He also sells a CD of the evening which I will be putting onto my phone for future listening posthaste. 12/10, will do again. This event has been approved by Cinead MacCoinneach II and III.
