An iconic archaeological site in Ireland, Poulnabrone Dolmen represents a stunning example of a Neolithic portal tomb. This stone formation features two vertical stones supporting a 3.7 m (12 ft) horizontal capstone. These most likely are burial structures that were erected between 4200 BCE and 2900 BCE. Learn about the lives and rituals of early farmers in the area through the formations that they left behind. These dolmens exist throughout Western Europe. Though it is not known for certain who put them in place or how they did it, excavations in this region show that the dead and their belongings were buried at this site up through Celtic times. Altes Portalgrab erbaut um 3800-3200 vor Christus. Stolze 1.80 groß, der Deckstein misst 3.65 Meter. Passt optisch sehr gut in die karge Burren Landschaft. Ist allerdings durch ein Seil abgesperrt. more »Old portal tomb built around 3800-3200 BC. Proud 1.80 tall, the cover stone measures 3.65 meters. Looks very well suited to the barren Burren landscape. Is, however, blocked by a rope.
Intriguing little place to visit. While the main attraction of the ‘Portal Tomb’ Dolmen is stunning, the surrounding limestone ground formation is extremely interesting. With a dedicated car park very close, this free attraction is not to miss.
Great historical place to stop, a very short walk from the car park along which are information boards which tell you all about the area and the Dolmen. There is no charge to visit, definitely worth going to.
