Trip Planner: Europe / Ireland / Province of Munster / County Cork / Cork / St Fin Barre's Cathedral
Visit William Burges' first Victorian work of architecture: St Fin Barre's Cathedral. The famed architect oversaw every detail of the church's construction during his lifetime, and the result is considered the best example of Burges' ecclesiastical work. Go inside to see the ornate interior with gold inlay and green- and rose-colored marble. The effect of the interior is enhanced by a refurbished organ dating back to the cathedral's construction in the 19th century. The church remains active and is supported by a vibrant congregation; consider attending a service or organ concert to round out your visit. St Fin Barre's Cathedral reviews
Beautiful church and grounds, however, always find it slightly distasteful when a church charges for entry. more »
St Fin Barres had been recommended to us by a relative, she knew we all have an interest in churches and architecture so we were all excited. Once there we were asked by a very polite and... more »
One of my favorites cathedrals here in Cork! It's absolutely stunning and imposing. The gardens are amazing and incredibly clean and tidy, with its blooming and colorful flowers. You can relax while laying on the grass and looking at the beautiful cathedral. When I heard about the labyrinth in the gardens I thought that there were some kind of enormous walls of plants, but it's just a tiny, babies-friendly labyrinth.. it was kinda of a disappointment😅 In addition, I didn't see the cathedral from the inside because you have to pay €6 and, in my opinion, it's a little expensive and unfair because there are so many stunning churches and cathedrals and all of them are free! I don't get the point. The most interesting fact that I heard about the cathedral is the story of the golden angel located in the back side: it's a common thought that Cork inhabitants will be the first ones to know when the end of the world will come, because the angel will play his trumpet. It's a very interesting legend!
Amazing, just a noisy ticket to enter inside that disappoints me. I can understand requesting an offer, but to ask to pay a ticket in a catholic church is really too much for me. Anyway I assign 5 stars to the amazing architecture of this building!
