Witness the remains of a Zoroastrian tradition of excarnation at Zorastrian Towers of Silence, which once received dead bodies for purification. Imagine the dead, separated by age and gender, in three concentric circles on the top of a funerary plateau, where they literally turned to ashes after the work of vultures. Economical, well-aired, and egalitarian, this 3,000-year-old climate-appropriate practice was outlawed in 1979. What remains of these intriguing brick structures, called dakhmas or deme, was nicknamed by a British colonial translator who identified a similar practice in Mumbai. Wear hiking boots if you want to climb the hilltop tower and get a guide for details on Zoroastrianism. Zorastrian Towers of Silence is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our , international travel planner Edition.

  • “Zoroastrian Towers of Silence” is 15 km from Yazd and built on a low hill in Safaie. they believed that water, soil, wind and fire were sacred, they did not bury their dead. The towers were built far from the city to prevent disease transmission, it includes towers and resting places for mourners. The Zoroastrians put their dead there to be eaten by birds, the remaining bones were stored in the middle well. Access to this place is very easy by car about 15 minutes away from Yazd.
  • The place is fascinating. But not because of the dead people (there is no cemetery and/or bones), but because of its atmosphere. Lonely hill-towers in the grey desert. Be sure to visit the higher and less preserved tower. It is more authentic and provides for much better views of the Yazd, mountains and ruins.
