Fort Rotterdam, Makassar

#1 of 28 in Historic Sites in Sulawesi
Historic Site · Tourist Spot
Visit Fort Rotterdam, a set of historical buildings. First built in 1545 in a mixture of stone and burnt clay, the fort was captured by the Dutch in 1667, becoming a strategic base for the colonial power in eastern Indonesia. Used as a prison by the Dutch and occupying Japanese forces during World War II, the fort now houses a museum detailing the complex history of conflict and contest in the region. It also serves as a well-preserved example of Dutch-era architecture. Make Fort Rotterdam a part of your Makassar vacation plans using our Makassar trip builder app.

  • Historical building (dutch fort) at makassar city. Well preserved. You can walk around along the fort wall. But i suggest don't go there at working days, because a lot of vehicle parking, and difficult to find a good photo spot.
  • Nice to walk around the garden inside it, it's free.. you just need to fill the guest book. For some tips, some man will guide you and tell you the history behind this fortress
