Almost entirely flat, blanketed in green vegetation, and shaped like a banana, Bunaken sits in the national marine park of the same name. The bending palms, pristine beaches, and sandy coves certainly make it scenic, but the real sightseeing in Bunaken happens underwater. The marine diversity on display astonishes, boasting around 3,000 species of fish--more than 70 percent of those found in the Indo-Western Pacific. Other notable denizens of the area's coral reefs include five species of sea turtle, a resident population of rare dugongs, and seven of the world's eight species of giant clam, all visible through extraordinarily high-clarity waters. The dizzying drop offs and strong currents in some locations can challenge those inexperienced underwater; however, with around 20 different dive spots, novices will still find some areas suitable for them, as well as plenty of great snorkeling sites. Unsurprisingly, you'll be eating mainly seafood on Bunaken. Plan how to spend your time in Bunaken and other destinations in Indonesia using our Indonesia visit planner.
