Lake Maninjau, Bukittinggi

Home of sweeping views and small but thriving fish farms, Lake Maninjau remains a peaceful place, despite its popularity with foreign tourists. Formed by a volcanic eruption some 50,000 years ago, this caldera lake sits about 460 m (1,500 ft) above sea level. To reach the lake, take a bus from Bukittinggi. The scenic journey takes visitors down a narrow road making 44 hairpin bends before it reaches the lakeshore. Experience the area on a bicycle, or speed through the lush lakeside surroundings on a motorcycle. If you prefer slower activities, take a canoe trip across the lake.
