Assi Ghat, Varanasi

#6 of 229 in Things to do in Varanasi
Landmark · Tourist Spot
Head down the steps at Assi Ghat to appreciate the ceremonial architecture and atmosphere of the city's southernmost ghat (a series of stairs leading to a body of water). Located at the confluence of two major rivers, the riverbank area is reputedly the place where the goddess Durga threw her sword into the water after killing a demon. See the large Shiva lingam (an abstract representation of the deity) under the shade of a peepal tree, a major site of Hindu pilgrimage and a focal point of ceremonies and celebrations at the ghat.
