Must see · Religious Site · Tourist Spot
Surrounded by a massive stone wall enclosing an area of 3.6 hectares (9 acres), Vadakkunnathan Temple features classic Kerala architecture with monumental towers on all four sides. Set in the heart of Thrissur, this represents one of the largest and oldest Hindu temples in the region, with its koothambalam, or temple theater, dating from the 7th century. Pay special attention to the murals, which depict episodes from the Mahabharata, and enjoy the temple's lively colors, elaborate wooden carvings, and expansive surrounding greenery. Every year, millions of devotees flock to see a line of decorated elephants during the temple's famous pooram festival (mid-April to mid-May), culminating in firecrackers.
