A Hindu shrine hidden inside a thick forest of a tiger reserve, Mangladevi Temple is made of large granite blocks and sits at an altitude of 1,337 m (4,386 ft) above the sea. Perched on a hillock on the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border, the temple grounds provide sweeping views of the Western Ghats, with small villages scattered among the lush greenery. Accessible only by jeep through 12 km (7.5 mi) of forest, the area around the temple is abundant with wildlife, including the rare state animal, the Nilgiri tahr (ibex).
