Trip Planner: Asia / India / Karnataka / Mandya District / Srirangapatna / Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, Adiranga
Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, Adiranga is the first of five sacred sites located along the river and dedicated to a resting form of Lord Vishnu. The temple's most prominent feature is "gopura" (a tower), rising over the entrance gate. Pass through the pillared hall to get to the inner sanctum, which holds a statue of Lord Vishnu lying on the coil of the seven-headed serpent king--one of the primal beings in Hindu religion. Look for three-dimensional reliefs depicting the same subject on one of the minor shrines in the courtyard.
