Chatham Saw Mill, Port Blair

3.4
Visit Chatham Saw Mill to see how workers produce timber to meet the local construction requirements. Owned by the state government, the mill was established in 1883 by installing secondhand machinery operated by unskilled labor. Japanese bombs destroyed the entire place during World War II, but it came back to life in the 1950s, salvaging what was functional and reparable. Visitors can also examine the site where the bomb was dropped. Hire a guide to give you detailed insight about the mill's long history and afterwards head to the museum to observe the artifacts and photographs. Because of the mill's vast size, stick close to you companions during your tour. • The large and beautiful Government saw mill by the side of the beautiful sea. The saw mill consists of a big area. Different types of old machines are working to split the woods of different types and sizes into different shapes and sizes. The workers are seen to work here seriously and with risk. Lack of concentration will lead to a severe accident at any moment. However, necessary precautionary measures have also noticed what they have taken during their work. The surrounding view of the sea is exceptionally well and beautiful. There is also a medical dispensary inside the saw mill. The forest museum here is also beautiful and amazing. It is a nice place to visit and enjoy with friends or family.
  • Vast saw meal which is still in open. In a separate island called chatham island. Souvenir shop is available in the compound. In the entrance you can find the map of the total saw mill. There is nothing much too see. 2 1 hour is sufficient. If you are on a short trip then don't visit this place.
  • I havr never seen a saw mill before. Nice experience seeing it and get to know how it works. There is a small museum adjacent to the mill where one can see impressive artifacts and wood sculptures. Chatham island is not very far from Port Blair and entry fees are very nominal.
  • A saw mill which works since the British era. Plenty of old machinery used to cut the wood logs to different shapes and sizes. Even elephants were used to haul the logs of wood. Precautionary measures should be taken inside to prevent any untoward accident.
  • Oldest Saw Mill of Andaman It s one of the oldest Saw Mill in Andaman located in Port Blair. Once you enter the Saw mill you can see the process of cutting the logs into different types of Wood Pieces. There will be lot of dust in the place where the Wood is chopped. There is also a shop from where one can buy wooden articles. Worth a visit.
