I recently had a few lovely days at a home stay near the beach in Nileshwar. Indica beach house also has a surf school per request. They started the surf school in Mangalore but have a small branch here. The house is situated on the beach road near a quiet junction between 2 resorts. A short 5 min walk (approx 50m) on a path through the palms take you to a long empty beach habited mainly by birds, crabs and some fishermen. You could walk for kilometers. The people from the resorts tended to appear on the beach for the beautiful sunsets. I was greeted by the friendly and very polite young Gautam whose passion is surfing and who was at my disposal for any help i may have needed. I had the house to myself as there were no other quests at the time. It was airy, light and clean. 2 bedrooms, attached bathrooms, a common room upstairs & balcony. One of the rooms, dining room and kitchen downstairs. Ceiling fans through the house. Washing machine available and self catering possible. Filtered drinking water in kitchen. Hot water in kitchen and bathroom. Towels, toilet paper and soap in the rooms. WiFi of course. As the house is just recently completed there were still a few finishing touches left like a few electrical wires and going over the gascets and tidying up the outside, and completing some kitchen utensils, but these will quickly and easily be sorted. No mosquitos that i was aware of. From my upstairs room I had the pleasure of waking up and enjoying the sunrise through the palm fronds from the comfort of my bed together with the country sounds of cockrels, goats and dogs and the call to prayer from the nearby mosques. This is a predominantly muslim area so please dress respectfully when out and about, but with this in mind i had no issues or disturbances on the beach. A few curious children. Guards from the resorts keep an eye on their beach front but there are long stretches of not much else than palm trees. Ask about currents if you are swimming. This is not a very touristy area so the resorts are self contained and no free standing restaurants or shops in between. I am sure it is possible to dine there though. It is to your benefit if you can drive a scooter and rent one during your stay as it will make it much easier to get around as you please. Otherwise you will need to rely on rickshaws which are around and you just have to wait 5-10 minutes before one comes by. There is a bus stop by the crossing that i think goes to Kanhangad. There are some good places to eat in both Nileshwaram & Kanhangad. Ask for the best ones. It is approx the same distance (15min in auto) from the house to Nileshwar and Kanhangad. Both have railway stations. Kanhangad is bigger and busier than Nileshwar. There are some nice small temples around the towns you can visit. Nileshwar palace is currently closed and not in use. However a temple elephant was residing in the back. I enjoyed walking around Nileshwar town to get the feel of it. If you want to visit Bekal fort you can take the bus from Kanhangad which takes about 20 minutes. No direct bus from Nileshwar (N->K approx 20min). A good way to see what the area looks like as it is difficult to see out of a rickshaw if you are tall. By the Kottapuram Junction bridge is where you go to organise/board backwater trips. But the resorts and travel agents can also help with that. I immensley enjoyed my stay and would happily return. Good for single travelers like myself or a family or group of friends for some time away from busy cities.
