Sanjay Van, New Delhi

#3 of 6 in Nature in New Delhi
“What’s happening in Sanjay Van?” is an art project that attempts at understanding & uncovering some uncomfortable realities of the decrepit state of Sanjay Van, (an urban forest in the heart of the bustling metropolis of New Delhi,) and a celebration of the vitality that this forest sustains against all odds.

The Delhi ridge is an important part of the National Capital Territory of the Metropolitan City of Delhi, as it forms the extension of the northern side of the ancient Hill Ranges of Aravalli. The ridge, also known as the “Green Lungs” protects the city from the harsh desert storms of Rajasthan, filters the polluted air of Delhi, holds rain water in its ponds and roots stabilizing the ground water. It also provides shelter to wildlife, accommodating a variety of animals and birds.

Sanjay Van is a part of the south central ridge (near Jawaharlal Nehru University); it covers an area of 1,582 acres. Maintained by the DDA (Delhi Development Authority) the forest has fallen prey to illegal construction/ occupation, truckloads of debris, deforestation and neglect; the natural drainage choking with plastic and the lakes full of sewage from Vasant Kunj.

Despite the heartbreaking carnage of the forest I was moved by the breathtaking expanse of the kikar trees under the ruins of Quila Rai Pithora.

  • Nothing special here, no animals or special birds were spotted. One can go there for peace and to be away from the noise. Nothing eerie about this place apart from the silence. Go stop the watchtower located near one the the exit gates and get a good view of the city scapes.
