Vigaraharaja 1v, the chauhan prince of Sakambhari, captured Delhi frrom Tomars in the later half of thr twelfth century and his grandson prithiviraja 111, popularity known by the name of Rai Pithora Fort, extended the lalkot by building up massive ramparts around it. This enlarged city with the Lal kot at its south western base, is known as Qila Rai Pithora and is the first of the so called seven cities of Delhi. Qutubud-Din Aibak captured it in AD.1192 and made it his capital

The walls of this fortified city are visible at some places. They are 5m to 6m in thickness and as high as 18m on some sides, with a wide most outside them. According to Timur, the walls were pierced by thirteen gates. AMong the gates that still exist are Barka and Baduan gates. Ibn Battuta also mentioned the name of Baduan gate as probably being the entrance to the city.

Jahanpanah wall was built as part of defense wall of the fourth medival city of Delhi jahanpanah, established in 1326-1327 by Muhammad Bin Tughlaq (ruled 1325 - 51). It was designed to enclose the then inhabited area between the first two cities of Delhi, i.e, Qila Rai Pithora and Siri. A part of wall was excavated near its junction with the eastern wall of Qila Rai Pithora by ASI in 1964-65. The excavation revealed usage of rough and small stones for foundations and dressed ashlar stones for exterior finish of walls above ground level.
