The iron pillar of Delhi is a structure 23 feet 8 inches (7.2 metres) high with 16 inches diameter that was constructed by Chandragupta II (reigned c. 375-415 CE), and now stands in the Qutb complex at Mehrauli in Delhi, India. It is famous for the rust-resistant composition of the metals used in its construction. The pillar weighs over six tonnes (13,228 lb) and is thought to have been erected elsewhere, perhaps outside the Udayagiri Caves, and moved to its present location early in the Delhi Sultanate.

  • On first appearance it doesn’t look like much–a 22 foot tall iron pillar, slowly rusting away in the middle of an empty square in Delhi, India. The surprise comes in learning its age, some 1600 years old, much older than one would expect for an iron column which, judging from other exposed iron, should have turned to a pile of dust long ago.
  • One of the marvel of ancient India It is a iron pillar which has stood the test of time It has not rusted one bit It is still mystery to many that how advanced were metallurgy technique in ancient India Earlier their was a myth associated with it That a person who grasp this pillar by both hands behind their back Such person was considered to be very lucky and special Now it is protected by iron grill Ironically which has to be changed time and again due to rust But the iron pillar is still standing strong One of the fine example of India’s great past and achievement
