Haji Ali Mosque, Mumbai

3.9
Religious Site · Hidden Gem · Landmark
A representative example of Indo-Islamic architecture, Haji Ali Mosque dates back to the 15th century, erected to commemorate a prosperous merchant who gave up all his material possessions in order to make a pilgrimage to Mecca. A causeway connects the mosque with the rest of the world, but during high tides, water submerges this ramp and renders it inaccessible. Centuries old, the entire construction is slowly succumbing to erosion, mainly due to saline winds and more than two million visitors per year. • If not Indian be WELL covered, more than Indian standards. If white (especially females with light hair and eyes) be prepared for stares and side conversations about yourself as such presence is not common. The mosque is beautiful however much trash among the walk to & from. If fully covered you will find the visit educational, if not plan for a different day when you can be. Faith is important, be respectful of the requirements of dress.
