Must see · Historic Site · Landmark
Marvel at the imposing structure of Rumi Darwaza, an impressive gate in downtown Lucknow. Modeled after the Sublime Porte in Istanbul, this 18 m (60 ft) tall gateway features an elaborate carving of the main arch flanked by two slim observation towers. Built in 1784 in Awadian Mughal tradition, the gate guarded an ancient entrance to Lucknow through the main pointed arch, masterfully carved on the outer rim. After this point, traffic on the road below splits through three smaller pointed arches. Named Rumi in honor of the Eastern Roman Empire--the predecessor of Istanbul--the structure features jets of water rushing out of the sides of the arch from stone flower buds. • It's beautiful, you would just want to click a lot of pictures, but for this you better plan to visit the place in wee hours, the rising sun under the center gate gives a fantastic view and a site worth clicking. I usually visit this historic jewel on my morning rides. People gather there after there walks/run/ride. The whole environment is displays the morning awesomeness!! One can also find vendors selling fresh buttermilk, milk and other Indian healthy drinks.
