At an altitude of 3,600 m (11,800 ft), Thiksey Monastery welcomes both daring travelers and locals looking for a spiritual awakening. Resembling the architecture of the Potala Palace in Lhasa, this 12-story complex houses many Buddhist relics and artworks, including stupas, statues, wall paintings, and swords. Within the complex you can visit a temple housing a 15 m (49 ft) high statue of Maitreya (future Buddha), covering two stories of the entire structure. Another highlight is a shrine dedicated to the goddess Tara, which attracts many visitors. I loved the story of the Tibetan monks carrying the design for the palace, engraved on wet turnip, which had dried out by the time construction began in Ladakh. Thus accounting for the variance in arc... more »
Just fell in love with this place and I feel no one should miss out in visiting this monastery. The monastery is situated at a very good height and so it provides spectacular views from its terrace. From the time you enter till the time you reach the top you get flooded with beautiful scenic views where you can take pit stops to take great captures. There is a huge Buddha statue in the middle of the monastery or the main praying hall which is about three to four stories in height. We nearly spent 3 hours and had to leave because it was getting dark but we could have spent more time if we had the scope for the same. Just an amazing serene place to quitely imbibe the mesmerizing and breathtaking views of the Himalayas spread 360 degrees around the monastery.
Beautiful monastery, a must visit during Leh-Ladakh tour. There is a nice restaurant in this monetary. I tried local dishes and all were fantastically testy, one must try them out here. There are shops in this complex, but I found them expensive. It will take minimum one hour to visit this place and be careful not to rush climbing steps, take it slowly, do not forget that you are at high altitude. If you walk too fast there are chances of getting hospitalized for sure.
