Trip Planner: Asia / India / West Bengal / Kolkata District / Kolkata (Calcutta) / Jorasanko Thakur Bari
Admire a red, three-story colonial mansion with cream bordures, latticed guardrails, and dark green louvers at Jorasanko Thakur Bari, the ancestral home of the Tagore family. Built in 1785, the complex now houses Rabindra Bharati University. The main building in which Rabindranath Tagore, the poet and first non-European Nobel laureate, was born and died has now been converted into a museum. See a photo exhibition and personal belongings of Rabindranath, as well as some of his paintings. Relax in the green inner courtyard of this 35,000 sq m (376,737 sq ft) complex, and see a Soviet-made bust of Tagore on a marble pedestal. An enchanting place. If someone is interested in literature, s/he must visit this place with ample amount of time. It's worth visiting in any case. I think at least 6 hours should be devoted for properly enjoying the serene and mesmerising home of Tagore. One of the best thing is the serial descriptions of his last few days; if read properly, one must feel like seeing the poet in person in his last days. It's awesome, in short.
It is good. The memories of RN Tagore is well preserved and presented. However , there is a heck of opportunities to improve the whole experience- from proper souvenir shops to clean toilets, from self guided audio tour to banning stray dogs inside museum compounds - the list goes on. This is where we lack to improve and compete at global level. Hope authorities would pay attention as I am sure when RN Tagore was alive he would have looked for a cleaner and better managed museum too.
