Birla Planetarium reviews
The Birla Planetarium in Kolkata is the biggest planetarium in India. The planetarium is very well maintained. We had been to a show in English and enjoyed it very much. more »
I remember visiting this as a child with my father on numerous occasions. I was pleased to see that it was well maintained and that locals are enjoying it as much as I did. The shows are excellent..... more »
Today I attended the 1:30 show (English). The presentation was nice but the presenter told that the age of Universe is 16.8 Billion years, which as far as my knowledge goes (and I believe most of world's ) is 3 billion years older than the present estimate of ~13.8 Billion years. When I asked her after the presentation about this, she confidently said that 16.8 is the correct number and asked me to check it up. She mentioned that she works there, perhaps alluding that must mean her information must be credible. I am a working scientist and extremely eager to know the source of this breakthrough, which I am not aware of. If I turn out to be right, perhaps I would say I did not like the unfortunate attitude to deny the misinformation coming from a science educator. I also missed the old charms of Calcutta skyline and diminishing moon overhead. Instead heard a cheap, restaurant-like saxophone music before the show starts. I must confess, this itself is a kind of deal-breaker for me and I sincerely missed the old ambiance. The graphics was new and fantastic. But I felt that this revamped experience traded some old charms for some new better graphics. Overall, the experience is OK!
I visited the planetarium recently. The garden outside was great and well maintained and clean. You can find the show timings online and in some of the questions related to this place on Maps as well. Every show played on the timetable are in one of the languages - English, Bengali and Hindi. Also there is a huge queue for the ticket booking for the show which extends till the entry gate. Similarly there is a huge queue for entry as well which extends till the outside street. Queue is managed very poorly. The ticket is Rs 80 for every visitor without any concession. There no card payments or wallet payments accepted here and hence this is a cash only place. Students in group of 25 or more has discounted ticket of Rs 35. Make sure you keep your baggage in the baggage counter which is located towards the backside of the compound. Toilets are located to the left of the complex. The name of the show played is 'Cosmic Collection'. The show is a wonderful experience. It explains formation of earth and past and future of our galaxy. There are no food counters within the compound and so ensure you have food outside the compound.
