Thirunelli Temple, Kalpetta

#1 of 6 in Historic Sites in Kalpetta
Trek through thick forest to reach Thirunelli Temple, an ancient, isolated site sitting at 900 m (3,000 ft) above sea level. The route to the temple winds through a wildlife sanctuary with plenty of opportunities to spot the local residents. Small streams, ponds, waterfalls, and an old stone aqueduct pulling in water from a nearby spring contribute to the harmonious nature of the temple's surroundings. The pilgrimage site, dedicated to Lord Maha Vishnu, is believed to be more than 1,000 years old, with remains of ancient villages uncovered in the nearby forests. • Fantastic atmosphere.. Its in the forest Happy to travell in forest by seeing lot of wild animals. Enjoyed a lot.. Thank god
  • Peaceful place i ever visit in kerala. The temple placed inside the forest. If you have to schedule your time like reached there at before 8pm. Animals are crossing or stands on roads. Dont blow horn when you met any animals. Please put your headlights on high beam mode and wait.
  • Very old temple. Unfortunately we reached around 2 PM and the temple was shut. The drive to the temple was through a forested area. We saw a bison. The temple itself is very old fashioned and has intricate designs on its walls. Red tiled roof. very quiet and serene. There is a pathway which leads to a pond and further up to a Ganesha statue surrounded by thick vegetation. Be sure to visit these two spots as well. There is ample parking space right next to the temple. There is also some food joints nearby. Check the timings and plan well.
  • Very nice place. Good views. I visited 2 times. Best time to visit is early morning.
  • This ancient temple is situated about 31 kms away from Mananthavady town, Wayanad district, North Kerala. The temple is in the midst of forest surrounded by hills in a serene atmosphere . The temple is famous for ' Vavubali' a Hindu ritual for the salvation of the souls. People throng from all over Kerala in Karkidakam - a Malayalam month- for the ritual. The ritual is also carried out through out the year in the temple. A rivulet called ' Papanashini' flows through the temple premises . It is believed that a bath in the rivulet removes the sins of the person. Whether you are a believer or not, the travel through the forest with animals like deer, monkeys and elephants and the visit to the picturesque and serene temple will be an unforgettable experience
