Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur

4.7
Perched atop a rocky promontory and overlooking the surrounding plains, Mehrangarh Fort and its towering walls rank among the most iconic landmarks in the country. Built in the 1450s by the rulers of the Marwar Kingdom, the fortress bears cannonball scars from the battles it saw in the following centuries. On your way up to the castle, you can marvel at the fortifications that rise 125 m (410 ft) above the city, sticking straight up from the hill's rock face. Explore the museum within to learn more about the fort's history and see an extensive collection of rare arms, armor, artwork, and other artifacts from the region. From the top of the battlements, lined with antique cannons, you'll get a sweeping view over the city and the landscape below. • Arguably the best fort in Rajasthan. Very well maintained and it appears impregnable. Taking a guide is recommended. Audio tours are also available if you want to do it at your own pace. We took an elevator to the top as we were tired but the best way is to walk up to the top level and feel the huge walls close in on you.
  • I can say little; the scale of this seat of the Maharajah is awesome. Simply look at any decent guide. Set on a cliff top, a lift is available. The historic collections are well presented in their different areas. There is so much beyond the awesome view to take in here. Caution is advised for those less than fully fit.
  • This place looks awesome from distance. I drove my car to the fort. The parking space is limited. Once you reach there, a person need to walk a long distance inside the fort to explore each and every corner. A view of the city can be seen from this palace. Also, very old temple is located inside the temple, it is a must visit place.
  • Amazing monument. Was overwhelmed with the magnitude and scale of its construction. Our guide Mr Lalit, was very knowledgeable and kept us regaled with his witty anecdotes. He is also an accomplished photographer who took some memorable pictures. Among the forts in Rajasthan, this one was by far the best.
  • It's an imposing fort. Well maintained and a must visit. Audio guide is just ok. Plan to spend 2 to 3 hours. Avoid summer months and afternoon timings. It can get uncomfortable hot. View of ramparts is breathtaking. Plan to spend the sunset at the rampart.
