Jaisalmer Fort, Jaisalmer

4.2
Visit the World Heritage Site of Jaisalmer Fort, a vast, sandstone complex that reveals a bustling town within its walls. Built in 1156, the “golden fort,” as the massive fortress is known, acted as a sort of camouflage for the city, blending in with the sweeping sands of the Thar Desert. Take a guided tour to learn about the history of the fort, or take your time and explore the narrow lanes, lined with craft shops, temples, and eateries. Perched on top of a 76 m (250 ft) tall hill, the fortress dominates the surrounding parts of the city and offers panoramic vistas. • Visited Jaisalmer City Fort with family. It's city within a city. Good architecture and interesting story. The golden color walls in common not just in fort but also across Jaisalmer. The intricate streets, colorful shops and multiple museums have everything a tourist wishes for. We had hired a local guide as we wanted to understand through history and key places. Interesting story about Jain Temple.
  • This city is absolutely what a romantic would think a desert city should look like. It rises up out of the sand just like an enormous sand castle on a beach. It's spectacular by day and magical at night. If you're deciding whether to come here I would encourage you to do it. It is a long journey to what feels like the end of the line but there is nowhere like this. Yes it is touristy but city fort is huge with plenty to explore. You can also lose yourself in the Thar desert when you've had enough of the crowds. That is the other main attraction around here and you can camp out (in a permanent camp) or take a camel trek. Inside the Fort you can visit royal palace which is now mostly museum, incredibly ornate Jain temple, and many traditional haveli style houses. Many people live and work inside the city Fort so it feels more like a town full of shops and places to eat etc but that also makes it feel authentic - this was a walled city in the past when the defence was needed. Also if you wander up on the walls of the old city, people still live in small houses built in to the side. Be sensitive, but it is possible to be shown around some homes. Unique and unusual place to live.
