Zanana Enclosure, Hampi

4.2
Architectural Building · Historic Site
Part of World Heritage-listed Hampi architecture, Zanana Enclosure served as a place of rest and leisure for the queen and her royal entourage. Designed in a distinctive Indo-Islamic style, this fortified area included sprawling grounds surrounded by tall walls and towers, guarded exclusively by eunuchs placed there to prevent males from entering. A highlight of this part of the complex, the two-story, lotus-shaped building resisted destruction by Mughal invaders and subsequent centuries of weather damage. Near this structure you can also see the remains of a royal palace, most likely one of the grandest buildings within the Hampi complex. • Beautiful place. Well maintained. Has an entry fee of 40 rupees for Indians and 600 for foreigners.
  • Be prepared to carry a lots of water. One gets easily dehydrated walking around. This is a well guarded place surrounded by thick walls and 2 watch towers. This residence of the ladies was guarded by eunuchs, the feminine bodies with the strengths of a man.
