Monolithic Bull, Hampi

4.0
Simple in appearance but astounding in size, Monolithic Bull sits inside one of the pillared pavilions scattered across the Hampi World Heritage Site. Carved out of a single immense boulder, the statue represents Nandi, the favored mount and gatekeeper of Lord Shiva. Virtually unchanged five centuries after its creation, this monumental bull managed to escape the destruction of the Mughal invaders, who hastened the downfall of the Vijayanagara Empire in the 16th century. Chiseled in a simple manner, the giant statue lacks elaborate details that make other Hampi carvings so visually impressive. Still, despite its coarse appearance, the bull remains a favorite photo op for many visitors to this sacred site.
