4.4
The magnificent twin-temple complex of Shahastrabahu Temple displays rare architectural brilliance with masterfully carved facades. Built in 1092 on a 32x22 m (104 x 72 ft) base, the temple sits on the banks of lotus-covered Lake Bagela, offering a scenic view of the city of Gwalior. Not in use for worship, the site offers serenity without rituals or festivities. Roam around freely and admire the masterfully carved edifice, including idols of Saraswati, Brahma, and the 1,000-armed Lord Vishnu. Enhance your visit by hiring a guide on site to explain the images and painstakingly restored architecture. • Located on the road between Udaipur and Pushkar, this small building (which is visited quite quickly) dates from the 5th century, it is dedicated to Vishnu. One can only marvel at the great finesse of the reliefs that adorn its walls, columns and ceilings. Many sculptures carved in the various parts of the temple represent erotic scenes that praise the Kama Sutra (whose invention is Hindu). Our big chance was that we were the only ones on the site (we only crossed the little neighbors of the place, adorable little girls, and their daddy)! Great to discover such a place in quiet and without anyone, an extremely rare fact in such a populous country!

  • These two Temples are a joy to even though all the statues were defaced by the Moghuls all this years ago. Great panoramic views from the smaller Temple. Entrance is part of the Fort ticket.  more »
