Do Drul Chorten Monastery, Gangtok

#3 of 8 in Historic Sites in Gangtok
Admire the exquisite golden top of Do Drul Chorten Monastery, visible from many far-away spots in Gangtok. Built by Trulshik Rinpoche (a celebrated lama of the Nyingma order of Tibetan Buddhism) in 1945, the stupa drove away haunted evil spirits that were believed to rule the area. Read mantras inscribed on the 108 prayer wheels while turning them clockwise. Inside the stupa, find a complete set of holy books, Buddhist drums, and other relics. The stupa welcomes anyone to pray inside and charges no admission fee, although it graciously accepts donations. • A very quiet meditative place. For art and culture lovers it is a fascinating place to see the detailing of Tibetan folk art on the monastery walls and also to get a first hand understanding of the monastic way of life. There is an added bonus of extremely good looking and fuzzy cats and dogs on the way. Make sure to buy the printed guide at the entrance and get a pretty postcard as well!
  • This was my first time at a Buddhist monastery and I was only people who's making noise. The environment is peaceful and relaxing. The prayer wheels doesn't even make a sound. It is said that turning the prayer wheels clockwise is equal to chanting mantras. The monastery is situated minutes distance from MG market and the nearest monastery from Gangtok town. There's a room filled with hundreds thousands of lanterns glowing and dancing.
