St. Thomas Mount National Shrine, Chennai

#9 of 129 in Historic Sites in Chennai
Religious Site · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
On top of St. Thomas hillock lies St. Thomas Mount National Shrine, dedicated to the Virgin Mary and marking the site where apostle Thomas was allegedly martyred. Even though the shrine dates from 1523, historians trace the holy site back to India's ancient Syrian Christian community in the 1st century CE. Start your exploration of these sacred grounds from the gateway of four cross-surmounted arches, and head towards the mountain's peak by taking a flight of 160 steps. On your way to the summit you'll encounter 14 Stations of the Cross, where you can rest and take in the view.
