Jallianwala Bagh, Amritsar
Visit the memorial garden of Jallianwala Bagh, a public park that houses the monument to the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre, when British forces opened fire on unarmed civilians celebrating the Punjabi new year. The memorial was established in 1951 by the Indian government, to serve as a somber reminder of the tragedy in which an estimated 1,000 people lost their lives. You can still view numerous bullet marks on the preserved walls of the site, a reminder that a number of people also drowned while trying to escape the bullets.
