Harmandir Sahib, Amritsar

Must see · Religious Site · Tourist Spot
The expansive religious complex of Harmandir Sahib represents the holiest pilgrimage site in Sikhism. Built between 1585 and 1604, the complex suffered heavy damage during an Indian Army operation to root out Sikh extremists in 1984. Visit the extensive site and you'll immediately notice the pool surrounding the main temple, said to possess healing powers. Admire the marble base and intricate gilded top portion of the temple, a symbol for Sikhs the world over, and head inside to get a look at the interior, richly decorated with gold and precious stones. Respect the temple's guidelines by removing your shoes, washing your feet, and covering your head before entering. • In addition to its splendid design, visitors are equally impressed with the temple's spiritual atmosphere, an effect enhanced by the prayers continuously chanted from the Sikh holy book and broadcast throughout the complex. Part of the overall experience-and visitors are welcome to participate-is the chance to enjoy one of the 50,000 free meals the attraction serves up to visitors each and every day.
