Chand Baori (Step well), Abhaneri

See an impressive historical feat of engineering and design at Chand Baori (Step well), a stepwell consisting of 3,500 narrow steps descending over 13 stories into the earth. Built sometime between 800 and 900 CE, the well reaches 30 m (98 ft) into the ground, making it one of the largest and deepest structures of its kind in the country. Such wells served for irrigation and water storage purposes, and frequently had additional social and spiritual functions. With the temperature markedly cooler at the bottom of the stepwell than at the level of the ancient city, locals would convene at the foot of the structure when temperatures were particularly intense. • The Chand Bahori is impressive believed to have been built by the Raja Chandra in the early 8th century A.D. It has a square floor and almost 20 meters deep with double leg of steps on three sides, also has thirteen stepped levels with 3,500 stairs. It still functions as a well, collects rainwater to supply the locals also serves as a place of relaxation and as a place of ablutions before the visit of the temples. Baori are traditional wells or cisterns that take the form of an inverted cone and include in their deep structure several terraces joined by stepped sections. The depth of these traditional wells allows the air to remain at the bottom about 6 or 7 degrees cooler than on the surface, increasing the water's conservation capacity. This was the biggest we visited and it's a real beauty. It is free and there are not many tourists, you can make beautiful photos. 100% Recommended

  • One the best architecture you will see in Rajasthan apart from Palaces and forts. The way its built is super, the steps , the deep excavation is great. You wont be allowed to get down though and thats the way it should be. You must visit this place to see it and enjoy the moments.
