A unique exhibition of international art and objects related to volcanic eruptions and their impact.

On 31. May 2009 we opened an introductory exhibition of Eldfjallasafn Volcano Museum in Stykkishólmur in west Iceland, and it was open to early September 2009. The museum includes works of art, old and new, showing volcanic eruptions, as well as objects, artifacts, volcanic rocks from the unique collection of professor Haraldur Sigurdsson who has carried out research on volcanoes world wide for forty years.

The exhibition is a preparation for the founding of Eldfjallasafn Volcano Museum in Stykkishólmur in the near future, where many aspects of volcanoes and their activity will be examined, both in terms of the arts, science, literature and environmental effects. Talks are given daily in the museum in English and Icelandic about volcanoes and their effects, as well as information on geology that are suitable for people with little or no previous knowledge in this field.

  • This is a small museum with some volcanic rocks and artworks of various volcanoes. Don’t expect too much. Considering that the admission is only ISK 1,000, it’s a nice visit especially on a rainy...  more »
  • I visited the volcano museum on my trip to Iceland and overall I would say it’s a great place for a short stop 🔥 The museum itself is quite small but hosts a lot of interesting artwork and rock...  more »

  • This museum packs a LOT into a small, well-planned space. It does not feel crowded or overwhelming. Some of the artwork would stand out in a major museum - what a treat to find it comfortably at home and accessible in this sweet space. The rocks and artefacts are arranged logically, not in a stuffy manner. This little museum is worth a detour. I would love to have spent more time here!
  • I've travelled quite a bit, and I always enjoy museams. Having said that, this is the most boring museum I've been to. The exhibits are uninteresting - mainly a collection of paintings, pictures etc. Of volcanos labeled as "lava art". None of it particularly interesting or exceptional, in form or in execution. The most interesting exhibit is a collection of lava rocks from around the world - if you find a table strewn with boring rocks and boulders interesting. The entrance fee is 1300 kr - approximately 10 USD for adults. Not worth it, but if you get the same museum employee I got, you won't even have to pay. Good consolation! I observed said attendant who was disinterested in who was streaming in and out of the museam, and spent the entire time I was visiting on the phone. Tourists just casually walked in and out. No one paid. There's interesting, fun and exciting things to do in stykissholmur. Visiting this museum isn't one of them.
