Krafla Lava Fields, Lake Myvatn

4.7
#3 of 25 in Wildlife in Northeast Region
Experience the rising steam and bubbling hot lava of a real volcano at Krafla Lava Fields. These fields include the Krafla volcano, one of the most well-known volcanoes in Iceland. A local power station uses the geothermal energy coming from the steam of the volcano. If you would like to hike the 10 km (6.2 mi) around these fields, you can choose from two trail options. Many recommend doing both routes, as they are equally scenic and take only about an hour each. Don't worry about eruptions, though: no dangerous volcanic activity has occurred in this area since 1984. Krafla Lava Fields is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our custom trip planner, Lake Myvatn Edition.

  • From the car park to the route at the site of the lava spill from the Krafla volcano walk about 1.5 km. The route is very well marked and equipped with footpaths from boards in places where it is impossible to walk on the ground. Diverse landscapes change very quickly - black layers of spilled and dried lava, black soaring and warm to the touch volcanic sand, colorful influxes of clay, piles of stones and lava in the form of small mountains and other variations. You feel like you're on another planet)

  • The site had limited access so I just climbed up the first crater to see from above the beautiful turquoise water that fills it. I imagine that also the remaining part of the path would have been great to see.
  • One of the most awesome places I saw on my trip to Iceland and my favorite sight in the Myvatn area. Takes a bit of a walk from the free parking lot (about 30 minutes one way), but it is worth it. From what I read, the lava flow is about the size of Manhattan, and I believe it. The lava is still steaming!!!!! Amazing. You cannot miss this sight.
