Jokulsargljufur National Park, Asbyrgi

Jökulsárgljúfur National Park is a former national park situated in the north of Iceland around the river Jökulsá á Fjöllum. It lies to the north of the Dettifoss waterfall. On 7 June 2008, it became a part of the larger Vatnajökull National Park. The area is of interest because of its chaotic canyon and volcanic mountains. Eight thousand years ago, a volcano erupted directly underneath the river and glacial ice. This caused explosions and chaotic flooding. The center of the park was Hljóðaklettar (rock of echoes). Rauðhólar (red mountain) is of interest because of its special colouring. Another sight is the canyon of Ásbyrgi to the north of the park which is formed like a horseshoe.

  • we follow the course of the jokulsa, the second river of Iceland, we did it from the Askja to the estuary in the Arctic sea, magnificent crossing. These buns with beautiful towers are located on the dirt road (easy) between saidfoss and asbirgy. you reach them with easy walks. predict food because around there is only a tiny campsite with an information center and the usual clean bathroom. gorgeous detour

  • It is a national park where you can see the topography of a river flowing between 100m-high cliffs. It seems to be the topography created by the glacier. Asvilgi in the beautiful valley is included in the park.
