University Church, Budapest

4.4
Church · Tourist Spot
At University Church, behold an extravagant 18th-century Baroque church built under the Pauline Order. Notice its distinctive brown-red facade and towers capped with copper spires that today are tinged green with exposure to the elements. Step inside to see the richly decorated interior, featuring statues and gold accents. Gaze upward toward the high ceilings, where frescoes depict the life of Mary. The church also features a Black Madonna, inspired by the Our Lady of Czestochowa church in Poland. Local students often flock here before their exams to pray to the Black Madonna. • We walked past the church going to the central market and returned, as we remembered just how beautiful it is. The ol' lady hasn't lost her charm.  more »

  • Nice location. Nice church if that is what you want to see...
  • I was staying very close to this church and would walk passed it often, noticing the height and the bell towers but never feeling inclined to go inside. One day the door was open and I was very surprised to see such a beautiful, Baroque Roman Catholic church. The outside belies the splendor within. It is not on tourist sites so is very quite. It's a nice place to take a rest and contemplate.
