Historic Site · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
Climb the hill to Citadel for a panoramic view of the city, the Danube, and its eight bridges. Built in 1851 by the Habspurgs to demonstrate their control over the Hungarians, this fortress was never used in battle. Climb the winding stairs to the top of the hill or take a bus, taxi, or car and park in the available spots. Plan your visit to Citadel and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our Budapest day trip planning app.

  • Citadel on the the top of the Gellert Hill is a must place to visit. You can see the best panoramic view of the River Danube. The monument is also cool. The best sunset views of Budapest is there!  more »

  • One must climb some stairs but even that is a nice part of the experience. The top is magnificent and the whole city can be observed from there. It is especially good place for enjoying the sunset. Definitely a must! Highly recommended.
  • Breathe taking views. Go at sunset and watch the city lights come on. The views are the best in Budapest. If you don't do this your missing out on a must see thing in Budapest
