Buda Castle, Budapest

4.5
At World Heritage Site Buda Castle, you'll encounter medieval architecture, lush gardens, and centuries of royal Hungarian and Austro-Hungarian history. Though Nazis stole the palace's luxurious room exhibits in the 1940s, the building is still home to the Hungarian National Gallery, which holds significant collections of Hungarian art. It is also the site of the Budapest History Museum and National Szechenyi Library. This 13th-century structure has been renovated and modernized after it was nearly destroyed in World War II. Explore the surrounding neighborhood, known as the Castle District, which is celebrated for its historic houses, churches, and public buildings. • Most imposing building from the Pecs bank of the Danube, reached by bus, funicular or, as I did, on foot. Great views from the top. Doesn't really fit the normal description of a castle but is a worth...  more »
  • The castle palace is situated on a hill, not far from the Szechenyi Lanchid bridge. The ascent can take a bit, but you can also take a taxi up. Once at the top, the palace spans vast areas and includes numerous plateaus and premises. The alternation between green spaces, large open spaces and the palace is very nice and always offers opportunities to linger in shady places and observe the hustle and bustle of other tourists. The complex is very large and the descent towards the Danube is as beautiful as the complex itself. The castle palace is definitely a must and takes about 1.5-2.5h, depending on whether you are still visiting the gallery or a café.

  • Love the view up there! Prepare for a good climb. Although you can use the funicular to go up. There's also an elevator at the beginning halfway through and lift as well. It was Easter Monday when I went plenty of activities and farm animals like alpacas! Anyway, it was good to go.
  • The Buda Castle is an amazing place to visit. It's a walking distance from the Fisherman's Bastion which is also a fabulous sight to behold. You can get a great view/snap shot of the city including the Parliament building, the Danube chain bridge and the Budapest eye. I and my friends had a great time sight seeing and taking cool pictures here.
