Molen De Adriaan Museum, Haarlem

4.6
A Haarlem landmark for over two centuries, Molen De Adriaan Museum sits in the center of the city and provides insight about the history and architecture of Dutch windmills. Built in 1778 and badly damaged during a 1932 fire, the structure recently underwent a major reconstruction. Carefully restored to its old glory, the windmill is again fully functional, though not often in use. You can see it grinding grain on the weekends, and if you come on a weekday, join a guided tour to learn about the historical significance of windmills in this part of Europe. • As per title, we recently visited this mill and were very fascinated (as well as satisfied, of course). Arriving on site at around 12.30pm, we waited outside a half-hour as the first guided tour was in fact scheduled for 1pm. Once inside, we bought tickets (5.50 euros the fare) leaving our backpacks at the closet (not because they were forbidden, as specified by the manager, but as they are not comfortable to carry in tow). The guided tour then began outside, with the above gentleman to make us Cicero (of course in English the explanation). We then climbed to the upper floors until we reached the panoramic terrace. Here we witnessed a practical demonstration, performed by an attendant, of how the propeller of the mill can be oriented depending on the direction of the wind (see attached photo). Having visited this mill, in addition to those of Kinderdijk and Zaanse Schans, gave us a way to understand how much and how these structures, so apparently similar to each other on the outside, can actually be very different internally in décor and typology use. Thanks to our guide, we finally reached the exit to return to the city center. The surrounding urban environment is also very pleasant. ABSOLUTELY RECOMMENDED .

  • Highly recommend the windmill tour. It's amazing to get inside a working windmill and get up close. The guide was informative and has a great sense of humour.
  • I had a great time visiting Windmill De Adriaan. I highly recommend taking the tour, as you'll get so much more out of it than wondering around the windmill on your own. It was both fun and educational. I learned a lot about how windmills work and the history of their use in the Netherlands.
