Old Church, Delft

#2 of 13 in Historic Sites in Delft
Standing for nearly eight centuries, Old Church represents the oldest building in Delft, whose leaning tower is one of the city's major symbols. Located in the old city center, the Gothic church nicknamed "Old John" sits on the site of a much older wooden structure, likely founded around 1050. Approximately 400 of Delft's famous citizens lie entombed inside, including painter Johannes Vermeer and physicist Antonie van Leeuwenhoek. Other notable features include three pipe organs and a 16th-century bell that produces such powerful vibrations that bell-ringers only sound it for burials of Dutch royal family members and natural disasters. • Gothic architecture with a bright nave, nice stained-glass windows, stunning organ and a unique tower that leans from the vertical. Don't miss the Johannes Vermeer' s tomb inside. Cumulative ticket wi...  more »
  • Particular the steeple with a clearly visible slope. To reward the ability to derive as much from almost nothing. You pay a ticket of 8.50 euros to visit the two churches and to be able to climb the bell tower of the new church. Apart from the beautiful architectural structure, there is no major work inside. The old church contains many tombstones having been used to bury the deceased for a long time. The question arises spontaneously: how much will we have to pay in Italy to make our churches visit with all the works of art that they usually contain?

  • Beautiful church with a lot of history. Very different to see the leaning tower from the outside. The organs in here are fantastic! It is easy to get a package deal with the new church to enjoy them both (and the tower climb). Be sure to do so!
  • Beautiful old church with significant links to history. Well laid out presentations tell the story of many local residents.
