Nieuwe Kerk, Delft

4.3
Although Nieuwe Kerk translates to "New Church," this site holds centuries of history. The Protestant church was founded in 1350. In 1584 William the Silent, a Dutch prince, was entombed in a mausoleum inside. This started a tradition of burying Dutch royalty in a private family crypt. The most recent burial was Queen Juliana and her husband Prince Bernhard in 2004. Climb the church tower, the second highest in the country, for views of Delft, The Hague, Rotterdam, and Rotterdam Harbor. • Rare opportunity to be able to climb the churches staircase to the top. This is a unique experience and the prices are decent. Be very mindful of fears of heights or claustrophobia, as the climb is very steep and very narrow. There is only one way up and down, no elevators. There are stops along the way up and down, but you most definitely will find yourself squeezing through people. The views you will see are definitely worth it. Being able to walk around the spire and it's insides is amazing. You can go all the way to top, underneath the clock! The view is astounding. I might even call this a thrill ride!
  • Really beautiful church with a very well laid out series of displays and videos that tell you the history of Delft, the church and famous people buried within. The highlight for my kids was the church tower all 376 narrow winding steps of it. 376 was validated by my 11 year old daughter as she counted every single one. The views at the 3/4 point and at the top are worth the climb. I highly recommend the combo ticket that gets you the old church, new church and the church tower.
