Admire the opulence of the Dutch Golden Age, and stroll through one of Amsterdam's most luxurious historical residences at Willet-Holthuysen Museum. The house was originally built in the 17th century for the mayor of Amsterdam. After changing hands several times and undergoing a few modifications, Mrs. Willet-Holthuysen gave the house to the city, which converted it into a museum. A rich collection of artwork (much of it belonging to the previous owners of the house), is displayed throughout the rooms, which have been carefully preserved. After admiring the paintings, artifacts, furniture, and decor in the salons, ballroom, and private quarters, stop by the kitchen for a cup of tea or coffee. If the weather is nice, you can also visit the garden. The audio tour is free. Please check website for museum admission price and hours. Willet-Holthuysen Museum Reviews
Super chilled out Sunday morning museum visit. The audiotour is a "must" (it's also free) as there is very little written information posted within the museum. Great story & beautiful collection. Defi... more »
I den ene ende af den meget lange kanal Herengracht ligger i nummer 605 Museum Willet-Holthuysen, opkaldt efter ægteparret Louisa Holthuysen (1824 – 1895) og Abraham Willet (1825 – 1888), som var de s... more »At one end of the very long channel Herengracht is located in the number 605 Museum Willet-Holthuysen, named after the married couple Louisa Holthuysen (1824 – 1895) and Abraham Willet (1825 – 1888), who were the last inhabitants of this civic house, listed in 1687. The couple moved in here in 1861. After Abraham was dead, Louisa beheld the house with furniture and art collection to Amsterdam city, and today the museum is part of the Amsterdam Museum. Already in 1896, the year after Louisa's death, the house was opened to the public. It is an exciting experience, to be allowed to be a guest in a largely intact preserved home, such as rich citizens decorated at the end of the 1800 century. You'll visit the kitchen and other rooms where the servants work, and then go up in the other floors of the house and see the beautifully decorated rooms. There is little imagination to imagine that Louisa and Abraham are sitting at the dining table or in a couch. The garden of the house is decorated in French style. It was reconstructed in 1972 and appears very well maintained. Museum Willet-Holthuysen is a few minutes ' walk from the Hermitage Amsterdam, so it is ideal to visit these museums in succession.
Not many people know about this place, even my Dutch collègues. It definitely worth visiting! But if you don’t have much time, I’d say come to this one instead of museum van Loon because I think this one is slightly bigger? They are very similar.
Wonderful little surprise! If you'd like to see how wealthy people from Amsterdam lived and still live, a visit to this wonderful canal house is a must. I particularly enjoyed the kitchen and the staircase with marble statues.
