Visit one of Haiti's oldest and most famous rum distilleries at Barbancourt Rum Distillery. The Barbancourt family started producing rum directly from sugarcane juice in 1862 and is today recognized as one of the best rums on the world. With its own large plantation, the distillery now utilizes all of its own sugarcane for production. Staff will happily show you around the site; these impromptu tours usually include a tasting session in a quiet, shady corner of the distillery and the opportunity to buy world-class rum straight from the producer. If you don't speak French, try to bring a guide along so you can get the most from the tour.
