Witness Spanish colonial military defense at Castillo de San Felipe de Lara, which was built in 1644 to protect the port of San Antonia de las Bodegas from frequent pirate attacks. The 17th-century three-level fort, which is built of stone, sits on the narrowest point of the Dulce River. It consists of two outer walls, which envelope a semicircular bastion. Enter the fort via a small drawbridge over a moat. Plan to see Castillo de San Felipe de Lara and other attractions that appeal to you using our Rio Dulce trip planning tool .

  • This was a superb visit from our cruise ship. We went by water via happyfishtravel--72 km from the Port of St. Thomas. The trip to the fort through the channel and ocean was beautiful and the reconstructed fort was fascinating, and surrounded by a lovely park. It was an exceptional day.
  • We really enjoyed seeing the old Fortress and it was great taking the tour. We would recommend it!!
