Iximche, Panajachel

Ruin · Tourist Spot
Step back to the 15th century and learn about Mayan culture at Iximche. Dating back to about 1470, the local area was once the capital of the Late Postclassic Kaqchikel Maya kingdom, until it was abandoned in 1524. Find the remains of pyramid-temples, palaces, and two Mesoamerican ball courts, all of which sit in ruins on a flat grassy area. Nature has taken over some parts of the ruins, with grass growing at the top of the pyramid remains. Hire a local guide to learn about the history of Mayan culture and, more specifically, the archaeological site. Plan a trip to Panajachel easily and quickly by telling Inspirock to suggest an itinerary.

  • Worth visiting if it’s on the way. The little town leading up to the cite was very lively and also worth exploring.  more »

  • A Guide would add to your best experience here. Alex was really good! But to get into A Fire ceremony with a local Mayan Shaman elder was even better. There is a calming energy about this location. And simply beautiful. Be respectful of the no climbing in certain areas.
  • Quite a few restored Mayan buildings. Had a guide who told us the history. Really need someone as there are few signs explaining things.
