Step back to the 15th century and learn about Mayan culture at Iximche. Dating back to about 1470, the local area was once the capital of the Late Postclassic Kaqchikel Maya kingdom, until it was abandoned in 1524. Find the remains of pyramid-temples, palaces, and two Mesoamerican ball courts, all of which sit in ruins on a flat grassy area. Nature has taken over some parts of the ruins, with grass growing at the top of the pyramid remains. Hire a local guide to learn about the history of Mayan culture and, more specifically, the archaeological site. To find out how to plan a trip to Panajachel, use our trip itinerary maker.

  • The place is very nice, everything is clean and enough parking, I only have one observation and is that they do not have specific area for seniors, nor for people who use wheelchair, and the day I went I saw at least two people in chair wheels and several seniors. So I recommend assigning the parking lotes closest to the entrance of the archaeological site for such people.

  • Very nice place, full of history and mysticism, good place to meditate and fill with energy, the ruins are interesting and the guides very well prepared, we were lucky to see a Mayan ceremony.

  • Cool place. Paid a few bucks for a guide to take us around. Saw a Mayan ceremony. They sacrificed a duck and burnt it along with food as an offering to the gods.
  • This is an amazing site with plenty of ruins to look at. The only downside is that they didn't have any of their informational signs translated into English.
