Trip Planner: Central America / Guatemala / Sacatepequez Department / Antigua / Iglesia de San Francisco El Grande
Visit the Iglesia de San Francisco El Grande, where lies the tomb of Central America’s first canonized saint, Peter of Saint Joseph Betancur. He was known for founding the Hospital of Belen and the miracles he performed; the site brings thousands of pilgrims to this church each year. The church was severely destroyed by earthquakes throughout the 1700s and not rebuilt until the 1960s. Its Spanish-American baroque facade has sixteen vaulted niches and twisted solomonic columns. Various areas, including the bell and clock towers, remain in partial ruin. Admire the main altar and the paintings of saints throughout the church. Iglesia de San Francisco El Grande Reviews
The restored retablo is worth the visit, the "hall of miracles" a little creepy but I suppose not unusual for saints with supposed healing powers (Hermano Pedro de Bettancourt). Other side chapels als... more »

The curious thing when visiting it is the fervor of the Franciscan Brother Peter who dedicated his life to the care of the sick without the resources to be cared for. In fact, his social work continues to serve those who cannot access health. On the walls of the church squares and exvotes thanking Brother Peter healings.
One of the many fine gems in town. Tremendous amount of history here. Beautiful gardens and just simply wonderful all around. Visit, ask questions, learn, educate yourself. You wont be dissapointed
The San Francisco Church is a gorgeous church in the south end of Antigua featuring incredibly detailed architecture and interesting ruins to explore and it is still used for religious services to this day. For a small fee of Q7, you are able to explore inside the ruins of the adjacent convent, which suffered serious damage from earthquakes in the 1700's. There is an open-air courtyard in the centre which is surrounded by gorgeous lush gardens and crumbling ruins of the former building. Plants were growing through cracks in the rocks and large chunks of stone from the buildings which had broken off during the quakes were scattered around the grounds. I climbed the stairs to the roof of one of the buildings and discovered amazing views of the lush jungle covered volcanoes and mountains and the rest of the ruins. I really loved exploring here and the entrance fee to these ruins is the cheapest that you will find in Antigua (the other convents and churches charge Q40). This place is definitely worth a visit!
